About Rarotonga
Rarotonga is a rugged island of volcanic origins and dissimilar to other islands and atolls in the Cook Islands. Its central peaks are very distinctive, with razorback ridges descending down to the coastline, and streams along the valley folds. The top peak on Rarotonga is 658 metres (2140 feet) above sea level. The island is roughly spherical with a 50 km (31 mile) diameter. The island is ringed by a fringing reef that creates a wonderful inner lagoon some several hundred yards wide.
History of Rarotonga
Rarotonga is in the southern part of the Cook Islands, a fact echoed by its name - 'raro' means 'down' and 'tonga' means 'south', referred to by an ancient Tahitian navigator.
