Shopping in Rarotonga
The main town on the island is Avarua, which is the capital of Cook Islands and the country's main commercial and government centre. It is a small town, not a busy capital city! Enjoy browsing the small number of shops, or visit the museum. There is also a great centre for black pearls, where you can enjoy browsing - and buying! - these exquisite natural gems in the form of rings, earrings, bracelets and other jewellery. Some cafes and restaurants provide a pleasant place to rest and to enjoy a good cup of Italian coffee!
There is also a market in Avarua every day except Sundays. The stalls sell drinks, food, and handicrafts and this is an enjoyable experience.
Around the coastal road can be found the occasional general store. These are useful for buying basic food commodities (if you are staying at a self-catering option), as well as personal items, ice-creams and candies.
